Can you put furniture over floor registers?

I heard that if you put furniture over top of floor registers it is a fire hazard. Does anyone know if that's true? What if we close the vent first?

If the heat is on, then it could be a fire hazard,but even if the A/C is on it will make your furniture damp.Because we all know that cold air attracts moisture.
And like above stated its not a very efficient.
If your furniture piece has legs that keep it off the ground a little then use dbirds advice.
